Konexio - Coding as a Volunteer
At KONEXIO, our conviction lies in the transformative power of digital proficiency. Between 2018 and 2020, I had the honor to contribute as a Web Developer Volunteer. Our objective was straightforward: enrich the web development landscape by providing courses and support for professionals reintegrating into society, including refugees. By imparting fundamental web development knowledge and general IT skills, we aimed to equip our students with necessary tools for success in a digital era.
Overcoming Digital Disparities
Many individuals undergoing professional or social reintegration, including refugees, encounter substantial hurdles while trying to access digital opportunities. The absence of basic digital literacy can be a significant barrier hampering them from securing jobs or fully participating in societal activities. We were tasked with closing this gap through accessible and practical training that would empower our learners and pave way for new prospects.
Empowerment Via Education
We confronted these challenges directly by curating an extensive curriculum encompassing essential aspects of web development such as HTML & CSS for constructing styled web pages; PHP for server-side scripting; JavaScript (including jQuery and Ajax) for dynamic user interactions. Alongside aiding trainers in conducting beginner-to-intermediate sessions, we ensured our students received comprehensive support throughout their educational journey. A primary initiative involved assisting students in building portfolios from ground up which not only offered hands-on experience but also tangible evidence of their capabilities to present before potential employers. Furthermore, we created a showcase website and e-commerce platform from scratch augmenting their practical understanding.
Using Tech for Significant Outcomes
We utilized an array of essential technologies to build a solid foundation for aspiring web developers. Teaching HTML & CSS offered insights into web design and structure, while PHP educated students on server-side programming, enabling them to create dynamic websites. JavaScript, along with jQuery and Ajax, introduced interactivity to their projects. Programs like KONEXIO's Digital Initiation fostered digital independence among participants. The Certifying Paths program prepared them for tech-focused careers, while Discovery Paths allowed them to explore interests and enhance their digital skills.
